BE THE FIRST TO KNOW

It is a discrete story, with characters that you'll want to revisit. Just how a series should be! I really enjoyed this sweet little book - and the second in the series, Flying High, which I'll be reviewing on Friday. My 9 yr old was very keen to read them too, and she absolutely loved them. She read them during the Easter holidays from school and they inspired no end of witch-related play. I can definitely say that this series captures a kid's imagination!

My daughter's verdict: I find them very exciting and I particularly like the twist in the second one. I like that it's also a bit about friendship too. I thoroughly enjoyed them both! So there you have it! I'd say this is a lovely example of series fiction for this age group, and would absolutely recommend them.

Mar 01, Serendipity Reviews rated it it was amazing. Originally published on www. I loved this book from the first sentence. I felt like I had whooshed down a helter skelter into the magical world of Enid Blyton. It took me a couple of hours to read it and I was left wanting more from this enchanting world. Trix not only has to deal with learning with the difficulties of magic but she also has to put up with nasty Stella and her friends from the Enchanted Grove school.

Stella is a bit of a know it all and I do hope she is brought down a peg or two before the end of the series.

The other girls like Trix except from a group of girls who are unkind to Trix and her friends.

The Witching Hour is the first of six books in the Magic Trix series. When Trix turns 10, she gets a huge surprise - she's a witch! Not only that, but she's now taking witching lessons with the school librarian, Lulu, who also happens to be a witch! Trix, along with a couple of other young witches, is hoping to learn her witching lessons in order to receive sparkling gems and hopefully, one day, become a fairy godmother!

But there's one big problem - Trix can't tell anyone that she is a witch! Will Trix be able to keep it a secret from her best friend, Holly? And will she ever be able to become a fairy godmother? This is a fun magical read that young children will love. Trix and Holly's friendship is lovely to read and Trix's selflessness is a great representation of what a good friendship should look like.

The book is charming and humorous as Trix's familiar, Jinx, causes enough magical mayhem to amuse young readers. Following Trix as she learns magic, while having to hide it from her best friend, is exciting and keeps the reader wondering what is going to happen next.

My only issue with this book is that there is the classic mean girl. I really don't like this trope and I think it sets a bad example for young girls, but I guess they have to have an antagonist somewhere. The other issue I had with this book is that the illustrations are gorgeous, but the characters are drawn ever so thin with unrealistic proportions see images below. I don't think this is very appropriate for a children's book and I wish the characters had been drawn a little more realistically.

Ideal for: young readers aged Illustrations from the book showing extremely thin characters with unrealistic proportions.
